The First World War ( 1914-1918 ) pt2

1. Declining: Austria-Hungary

-A multi-national empire
-weakened by the nation groups fighting for independence
-started to expand into Balkans in the 1870s
-came into conflict with Serbia & Russia

2. Revengeful: France

-defeated by Prussia in the Franco-Prussian War ( 1870-71 )
-forced to cede territory and pay repatriations to Prussia
\-the national pride of the French was greatly damaged
-wanted to take revenge on Germany
-France seek for new resources to compensate her losses

3. Isolated: Britain

-the strongest colonial power
-adopted the policy of splendid isolation and did not interfere in European affairs
-challenged by Germany
-tried to form alliances to protect its position

4. Weak: Italy

-unified in 1870
- weakest of the European powers
-allied with Germany & Austria-Hungary
-fought with France for colonies in Africa

5. Expanding: Germany

- a new industrial power
- set up many colonies and aimed to surpass Britain
- posed a threat to other European powers because of its military aggression.
- tried to isolate France to prevent it from taking revenge

6. Ambitious: Russia

-the largest European power in terms of landmass
- weak economy
- expand into Asia & the Balkans
- came into conflict with Austria-Hungary
