The influence of the french revolution and the Napoleonic Era

-Spread of Liberalism & Nationalism

Liberalism

-People learned all people are born free & equal
-Their rights were not granted by God but had to be gained, sometimes through lost of life

Nationalism

-People learned that they should be loyal to their nation instead of government.
-Nationalism gradually developed into movement to set up a nation.

Unification movement in Europe

-The unification of Germany (1871) & Italy (1870) greatly upset the balance of power in Europe.
-After the unification of Germany & Italy, Austria-Hungary was greatly weakened.
-France was greatly weakened as a result of being defeated in the Franco-Prussian War.
-Two new countries emerged- Germany & Italy

Sick man of Europe

-The Turkish Empire was declined sharply since the 19th century
-She was one of the weakest European power & always being defeated.
-Turkish Empire was a multi-national empire.
Different national groups fighting for independence.

Austria-Hungary

-Austria lost her sphere of influence in Northern Italy.
-Austria was no longer the leader of the Germans states.
-She was a multi-national empire
-Different national groups fighting for independence.
